Congrats to Miss Maryland USA and Miss Teen Maryland USA

Drs. Linda and Chip have been the Official Cosmetic Dentists for the Miss Maryland USA Pageants for more than 10 years. We optomize the smiles for the winners before they represent Maryland at the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants each year. The past few years, the representatives from Maryland have done very well at the Miss USA event (thanks to their great smiles !).

In 2011, Miss Maryland, Allyn Rose finished in the top 8 at Miss USA and Kirsten Nicholson, Miss Teen Maryland, finished in the top 15 at the National Pageant. Congrats to both on their success during their year representing Maryland. We know that they will have very bright futures after their year is complete. They have done a great job representing the pageant through all of their many responsibilities. We hope they leave with great memories to go with their beautiful smiles.

Drs. Linda & Chip Lecture in Dutch Antilles

Drs. Linda and Chip recently attended a dental meeting in Bonaire, part of the Dutch Antilles. As many of our patients know, in addition to being passionate about providing excellent dentistry, Drs. Steel are also interested in scuba diving and dive medicine. Scuba allows Drs. Linda and Chip to decompress (pun intended) from the hectic pace of the Washington-Baltimore region and be able to participate in an outdoor activity together. Bonaire is considered one of the best diving areas in the world. While in Bonaire, Drs. Steel gave a lecture to a group of dentists on Interdisciplinary Dentistry, such as combining orthodontics and restorative dentistry to achieve a cosmetic result. Our lecture was well received and in addition, we were able to attend educational lectures ourselves to broaden our dental skills.

He we are, recharging our battery between dental education lectures.

Congratulations to Sherwood Lacrosse

Sherwood High School’s Varsity Boys Lacrosse team (Dr. Chip is the Head Coach) had an outstanding season in 2011. The team finished 13-3, having the best record at Sherwood in nearly a decade. The Warriors broke Wootton’s 71 game in-county winning streak along the way and placed 4 players on the All-County team, including Michael Begley, who was selected by the Montgomery County coaches as an All-American and player of the year. Dr. Chip and the rest of the coaching staff and players are looking forward to another successful season in the spring of 2012.

Drs. Linda and Chip recently attended the Annual meeting of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). The 27th Annual meeting was held in Boston. Drs. Linda and Chip are both Accredited Cosmetic Dentists through the AACD and have been very active in the organization over many years. Both doctors were Examiners for the credentialing test for over a decade and served on various boards for the Academy. Dr. Chip was the Chairman of the Credentialing Board and authored teaching manuals on dental photography and Cosmetic Dentistry for the Academy. In addition, Dr. Linda was editor of the AACD Newsletter and Chaired the Charitable foundation “Give Back a Smile” during its early years. After having served for many years in those positions, Drs. linda and Chip enjoy returning to the meetings to attend continuing education courses. Dentistry has changed over the years and requires lifelong learning to continue to offer the best possible care for our patients. The meeting was enjoyable and hopefully, we can put into practice some of the interesting things we learn every time we attend in the future.

Dr Linda is a member of the Women’s Board of Montgomery General Hospital. The Board is a volunteer service organization the has been a part of the Olney community since 1920.

The members of the Women’s Board raise money for the Hospital through a variety of activities, including the Hospital Gift Shop, the Annual Gifts of Light, the Thrift Shop and the Annual Picnic Bazaar.

For a number of years, Dr. Linda (and assorted family members and friend volunteers) has run the Cotton candy and Sno Cone tent at the Annual picnic and Bazaar, which is traditionally takes place on the 4th Tuesday each July.

The Women’s Board has raised millions of dollars for the Hospital over the years, which has aided the hospital in providing critical medical services to the community. If you have never attended the Picnic and Bazaar, make it a point to check it out next year and try some of the famous fried chicken and corn on the cob in addition to the crafts, books and live entertainment.

Congratulations to Kamie Crawford, the current Miss Maryland Teen USA® and the outstanding staff of the Miss Maryland USA® pageants.

Kamie recently became the first titleholder from Maryland to win the National Miss Teen USA Pageant.

Drs. Steel have been the Official Cosmetic Dentists for the Miss Maryland USA® and Miss Maryland Teen USA® pageants since 1998. We continue to enjoy enhancing the smiles of the Pageant winners each year prior to their participation in the National Pageant and are very happy to contribute to their success. 15 years of Accreditation

The summer of 2010 will mark 15 years since Dr.s Linda & Chip Steel passed the Accreditation Exams given by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. At that time, Drs. Linda & Chip became the first and only husband and wife dentists to achieve Accredited status through the AACD (hopefully not the last) and among the first 200 total in the world.. The AACD is a wordwide organization (over 70 countries) dedicated to the Art and Science of Cosmetic Dentistry.

Following their Accreditation, Drs. Linda and Chip were asked to be on the Board of Examiners, which is the group that evaluates the work of Dentist candidates for Accreditation. They served on the Board of Examiners for 10 years. In addition, Drs. Steel served for many years in various capacities for the AACD including the Board of Directors, the Charitable Foundation, the publications and the Board of Governors, which was the basis for the American Board of Cosmetic Dentistry (see details in our “Meet Drs. Steel” section of this site).

After all of these years, Drs. Linda and Chip still enjoy creating beautiful smiles and attending continuing education events with the AACD as well as other dental organizations. 15 years, thousands of smiles and counting …..

Drs. Steel assist Sherwood Science Fair

Drs. Linda & Chip Steel have served on the review committee for the Sherwood Science Fair for the past few years. Sherwood students develop projects that are designed to test scientific theories. A select group of students participate in the ScienceMontgomery Fair (a regional part of the International Science and Engineering Fair) after they complete their projects. At the regional fair, the students display their projects and are judged in various categories. Drs. Steel and other advisors with science backgrounds review the students’ project plans prior to their initiating the experiments. The Sherwood science program has excelled at the County level under the leadership of Department Chair, Jim Douglas, and continues to produce outstanding young students. In 2009 one of the top 4 projects at ScienceMontgomery was by Sherwood AP Biology studants. Those students then became eligible to attend the International Fair.

Drs. Linda & Chip are pleased to have been involved with the Sherwood science department as these students achieve great success in their academic pursuits. We all look forward to hearing about the great contributions to science and technology of Sherwood graduates in the years ahead.

Dr. Chip named Head Coach of Sherwood Varsity Lacrosse

Dr. Chip Steel was recently named the Head Coach of the Boy’s Varsity Lacrosse team at Sherwood High School. Dr. Chip played lacrosse in High School and College and after graduation played club lacrosse and indoor lacrosse for a number of years. He has been coaching locally for over 15 years at the youth level, middle school and high school. Prior to being named head coach at Sherwood, Dr. Chip was a goalie and defensive coach at Sherwood for about 5 years and was briefly working with the Good Counsel lacrosse team before going back to Sherwood. Drs. Linda & Chip’s sons (Alex & Nick) played lacrosse at Sherwood. Dr. Chip is looking forward to working with the Athletic Department, the parents and the players toward a great season and beyond.
