Genetic Test for Type 1 Diabetes

According to a recent report published in an online news site, the University of Virginia is working on a genetic test to help identify persons who are more likely to develop Type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes, which has been called “Juvenile Diabetes” or “Insulin Dependent Diabetes” is a condition in which the patient’s pancreas produces little or no insulin to allow cells to absorb blood sugar.  It is usually diagnosed in young children or young adults, but can occur at any age.  In the US, about 1/2 percent of all adults has this form of diabetes.  So far, about 2,000 children have participated in the study, and 3% have been identified as having  an increased risk.

Diabetes and periodontal (gum) disease have a unique relationship, each one apparently increasing the chance of having the other.  Diabetes increases the chance of Periodontal Disease, because diabetics are more susceptible to infections.  Severe Periodontal Disease increases the risk of Diabetes because it can contribute to a rise in blood sugar according to some research.  What this means is obvious : Identifying the risk of either condition and limiting the effects will reduce the risk of the other one.  Periodontal Disease can be limited and/or controlled with good home care and regular dental care.  If you are a Diabetic, that will be very important for you.
